A 51-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody at this time.

Brian and Mary Andrews were named locally as the couple who were killed.

It is understood they have three children and have lived in the area for years.

One neighbour told YorkshireLive: “People just can’t believe what has happened. They were such a lovely couple.”

Another neighbour said: “I have lived here since 2012 and I have never met a more quintessential, old-school Yorkshire man.

“He could look and sound a bit gruff but he was a very nice man once you got to know him. He’s from Rotherham originally and was a retired builder who built his own house and several others in the area.

“We would occasionally shoot the breeze together and chat about politics and that sort of thing. He would not initiate conversation but would be happy to stand and chat for a few minutes.

“He was a keen gardener and used to keep his garden immaculately and at one time used to plant flowers up the street. I was stunned to hear what has happened and everyone around here is very shocked. It’s just such a terrible, terrible waste.

“A lot of people have dogs round here and when they walk them up and down the street they will always be aware of the dreadful things that have happened here.”

Specially-trained officers are supporting the families of those confirmed dead at this time.

Chief Superintendent Shelley Hemsley, from Sheffield district, said: “This incident will have no doubt caused a lot of concern within the community and our thoughts remain with the families of the pair who have sadly lost their lives this morning.

“We have a number of officers at the scene and expect them to be there for quite some time today as we carry out a thorough investigation. Anyone who may have any information – no matter how small it may seem – should contact us as it may assist with our enquiries..”
